Suspect arrested following string of church burglaries

The Logansport Police Department has been investigating reported church burglaries during the last week.

The first burglary was reported to the Logansport Police Department on Jan. 16 at 7:05 p.m. The Refuge Worship Center, 1655 Michigan Ave., reported that they had been broken into and cash and a Coach purse were stolen.

The second burglary reported was Calvary Presbyterian Church, located at 701 Spencer St. This was reported Jan. 18 at 7:54 a.m. The office area was broken into and cash was stolen.

The third burglary reported was St. James Lutheran Church, 409 9th St. This was reported Jan. 18 at 9:17 a.m. The office area had been forcibly entered and cash was stolen from the church.

The fourth burglary reported was Greater Mount Zion Church located at 1500 Erie Ave. This was reported Jan. 18 at 12:41 p.m. Again, the office area was entered and cash stolen from the church.

The fifth burglary was located by officers with the Logansport Police Department just after the suspect was apprehended. Officers located an open door at Rehoboth Christian Church, located at 200 E. Columbia Street. After officers made contact with the pastor, he was able to determine that the church had been entered and cash stolen.

Officers located the suspect in the area of Brown St. and W. Linden Ave. walking on foot, approximately 1/2 block away from another church. He was taken into custody at that time.

The suspect is identified as Christian J. Alter, 22, of Kewanna. Alter was arrested for 5 counts of burglary and transported to the Cass County Jail.
