KOKOMO, Ind. — Get an inside look at Indiana University Kokomo’s new crime lab, at an open house Thursday, February 22.

Faculty, staff, and students in the criminal justice program will show the equipment and demonstrate what they teach and learn in the lab, in the East Building, Room 103. It will be open from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Kelly Fisher, lecturer in criminal justice and homeland security, said the lab provides simulated investigation experience, teaching students how to protect and process a crime scene. She creates investigations based on students’ future plans, to give them the experience each one needs to succeed.

“This lab gives our students a hands-on, realistic experience, preparing them for potential careers including police officer or detective, social worker, nurse, attorney, or other law enforcement work,” she said. “We are excited to welcome the public to see how we’re enhancing and growing the criminal justice program with this lab.”

Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke will welcome guests at 5:30 p.m., and students will also lead campus tours.

The IU Kokomo crime lab opened in August 2017, and is one of three college crime labs in Indiana. Using the kinds of equipment found in professional crime labs, students collect evidence at simulated crime scenes, including hair, fingerprints, and other trace evidence. They examine blood spatter, and use Luminol to find where blood was removed the clean up the scene.
