Isabel Q. “Betsy” Tiongson

Isabel Q. “Betsy” Tiongson ,71, Logansport, passed away at 12:24 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2018, in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis following complications from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident in 2016.

Born August 12, 1946, in Tarlac City, Philippines, she was the daughter of the late Constante Quirino, M.D. and Remedios (Pineda) Quirino..

On June 10, 1972, in the Manila Cathedral in Manila, Philippines, she was married to Atanacio H. “Nandy” Tiongson, M.D., who survives.

Betsy was a 1962 graduate of the Holy Spirit Academy in Tarlac, Philippines. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Foreign Service at the Maryknoll College in Quezon City, Philippines in 1966. . She completed her Master of Arts in Political Science at the University of Ohio in 1968 in Cincinnati. From 1968-69, Betsy studied French at the University of Fribourg and the Berlitz School of Languages in Switzerland and then traveled to Madrid, Spain to study Spanish at Mangold University.

From 1969-1972, Betsy was a professor in World History and International Relations at the Philippine Women’s University from.. During that time, she served as a program assistant with The Fund for Assistance to Private Education, helping students earn scholarships. After moving to the United States, she worked in New York City for the Media Payment Corporation from 1974-1977. From 1977-1979, she served as Secretary to the Ambassador of Kuwait at the United Nations in New York.

In March of 1979, Betsy and Nandy moved to Logansport where he began practicing ophthalmology. From 1995-1997, Betsy was the president of the Association of Philippines Ophthalmologists in America Alliance. She was a member of the Philippines Physicians in America Auxiliary and the Cass County Medical Auxiliary.

Betsy was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. She loved to travel. Betsy enjoyed playing the piano. She was a devoted wife and mother loved by everyone who knew her. Simply put, Betsy was an absolute joy to be around.

Surviving with her husband of 46 years, Dr. Nandy Tiongson, are one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Ann “Lisa” and Anthony Schaefer, of Fishers, IN; one son and daughter-in-law, Alan Paul and Lyn Tiongson, of Lincolnshire, IL; her siblings: Greg P. (wife Lellie) Quirino, M.D., of Westlake, Ohio, Constante P. (wife Sonia) Quirino, Jr. of Philippines, Elpidio P. (wife Betty Ann) Quirino, of Flanders, NJ, and Alicia P. Quirino, M.D. (husband Lito Jacinto, M.D.) of Richmond, Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada; her beloved grandchildren, Jude, Greta and Kai Schefer and a new granddaughter who will soon be born to Alan and Lyn; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 17, in All Saints Catholic Church with Fr. Dominic Petan officiating.

Entombment will follow in Ever-Rest Memorial Park.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 15 in Fisher Funeral Chapel.
