Officers placed on administrative leave after police action shooting in Walton

On Saturday morning, Jan. 27, at around 4:11 a.m., the E911 Dispatch Center received a call to a residence in Walton, Indiana, due to a male subject stabbing himself. Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Emergency Medical personnel, responded to a call in the 600 block of Carroll Drive in Walton.

Upon arrival, officers were met outside the home by a female resident who led them into the residence. Seconds later, Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies advised that shots had been fired inside the home and that they requested additional assistance.

Deputies Sergeant Pat Zeider, Ryan Preston and Reserve Deputy Gary Baumgardner were all in the residence when the shooting occurred.

Pat Zeider is a twenty year veteran. Ryan Preston is a one year veteran with the department and previously employed for seven years with the Logansport Police Department. Gary Baumgardner is a reserve deputy with less than one year of service with the department. All three deputies were placed on administrative leave immediately after the shooting, pending an investigation by the Indiana State Police.

Assisting at the scene were Prompt Ambulance, Walton First Responders, Indiana State Police, Cass County Coroner and the Logansport Police Department.

The investigation is continuing at this time; more details will be released when they become available.
