Logansport named America’s top small city for 2018

The latest edition of Realtor.com’s Top 10 Affordable Small Towns Where You’d Actually Want to Live” elevates Logansport to a lofty new height.

It ranks Logansport No. 1 in the nation based on housing costs, crime and unemployment rates and quality of life factors. Logansport is the only Indiana city in the top 10.

In an article about the rankings, the Dentzel carousel in Riverside Park is pictured, and there are mentions of parks, water sports, trails and France Park. Realtor Princessa Rennewanz was interviewed for the article and referred to the fact that Logansport has a wealth of historic homes, but even homes in the surrounding countryside are close to city amenities.

The rankings were based in part on the number of households spending 28 percent of their annual income or less on housing.

The rankings place the median home price at $62,700.

“This is a lofty ranking that speaks well of our community to people who are unfamiliar with what we have to offer and the things we value,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said. “This is about more than just affordability. It’s about livability and identifying places to raise a family, site an industry or retire.”

Kitchell said the affordability of the city will increase further next year when new electric utility rates are implemented. The city has been ranked among the 25 safest cities in Indiana the past three years, and this year will be the first in which the police department will be fully staffed.

Logansport edged out Mexico, Mo., for the honor. Ironically, both cities are located on U.S. 24.
