ALTER NAMED CITIZEN OF THE WEEK
Efforts to rally community support to prevent suicide are recognized this week with the naming of Serenity Alter as this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week.
Mayor Dave Kitchell announced her selection yesterday, following last weekend’s fund-raising walk at LHS Stadium brought hundreds of people out on a sunny Saturday morning for the “Out of the Darkness Campus Walk.” Alter and the Cass County Zero Suicide Task Force coordinated the event.
Kitchell says the task force set a goal last year of including 100 participants and raising $5,000. That goal was easily exceeded with more than 300 participants and donations exceeding $15,000. The community has experienced an increase in suicide and attempted suicide this year. The task force is working to create a local culture that promotes education of mental health issues.
The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.

HEADED TO THE INDYCAR GRAND PRIX THIS WEEKEND?
Fans attending the fifth annual INDYCAR Grand Prix on Saturday, May 12 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are encouraged to “Plan Ahead” through IMS.com/planahead, an interactive web page that serves as a home base for fans headed to the track during the Month of May.
The “Plan Ahead” page features detailed information about the entire fan experience at IMS, including directions, parking, track map, schedule, camping, gate regulations, tickets, ADA accessibility and much more.
No coolers larger than 18 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches can be brought into the facility, which will be strictly enforced. Fans will be allowed to bring one cooler and one standard backpack or book bag per person. The race is scheduled to begin at 3:50 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

NIPSCO MAKES $25,000 DONATION TO IVY TECH KOKOMO
Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) has kicked off the community effort to support the transformation of Ivy Tech Community College’s Kokomo Campus with a $25,000 donation. The company’s donation to the “The Time is Now” capital campaign also includes future energy efficiency incentives and upgrades.
The gift was announced Thursday, May 10, at the May meeting of the Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Region Board of Trustees.
The goal of “The Time is Now” campaign is to gather $3 million in community philanthropic support that will be added to a $40 million appropriation in state funding approved by the Indiana General Assembly to complete the $43 million project.
The project will benefit through NIPSCO’s Energy Efficiency Program. Under the program, business customers can utilize incentives to help offset the cost of implementing energy-efficient technologies. In addition to reduced energy consumption, the company says further benefits of participation include enhanced equipment performance, extended life expectancy of equipment, and reduced maintenance and cost of ownership.
STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE IS SATURDAY
On Saturday, May 12, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the United States Postal Service and other partners are asking customers to help Stamp Out Hunger tomorrow. This is the 26th anniversary of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, which has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2017, letter carriers collected 75.3 million pounds of food, the third-highest amount since the food drive began in 1993. That brought the total over the past quarter-century to almost 1.6 billion pounds.
To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing nonperishable food items such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12. Letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to local food banks.
IVY TECH HOLDING COMMENCEMENT TONIGHT
