HISTORIC PRESERVATION EVENTS SET FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
Several events will be happening this weekend in Logansport in observance of Historic Preservation Week.
On Saturday, the Historic Preservation Commission will host tours of two houses of local historical interest: 2430 East Broadway and 612 E. Wabash Avenue, which is one of the remaining structures in what was once the red light district in Logansport. The residences will be available for viewing from 1 pm to 3 pm.
From 4 to 7 pm on May 19, the public is invited to The People’s Winery to view more local memorabilia and to listen to music by Sam Piercy. Those going are encouraged to dress in vintage clothing or to portray a local historical character. A prize will be given for the best costume. Mayor Dave Kitchell will be there to talk about the challenges Logansport faces with historical preservation.
Preservation Week will culminate with Logansport Landmark’s 3rd annual Pitch In picnic on May 20th at the historic Burgman residence at 630 South 15th Street. Those attending can tour the upstairs restoration to date from 12 to 2. The picnic will take place from 2 to 5. Everyone is asked to bring a dish. Preservation issues, strategies, and successes will be discussed. Logansport Historical Commission Board member Tia Justice will speak about her family’s ongoing restoration of the former Greensfelder home which she and her husband recently purchased. The mansion was formerly on Logansport Landmarks endangered list.
FREE FISHING DAY SATURDAY, MAY 19
Saturday, May 19, is the second of four Free Fishing Days in Indiana this year.
On these special days, Indiana residents can fish public waters without needing a fishing license or a trout stamp. Free Fishing Days are prime opportunities for families to learn to fish because adults do not need a fishing license on those days, and children ages 17 and younger do not need a license on any day.
GOVERNOR HEADED TO EUROPE
Governor Eric J. Holcomb and First Lady Janet Holcomb will depart for Europe today, marking his sixth international economic development trip as governor. The governor will meet with government, business and adademic stakeholders in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France prior to delivering the Indy 500 green flag to Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Delta Air Lines’ (NYSE: DAL) inaugural flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on Delta Flight 501 next week.
INDY 500 QUALIFYING THIS WEEKEND
Qualifying for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 is set for this weekend. The 33-car field will be set Saturday. The starting order and pole position will be set on Sunday.
PAVING SET TO BEGIN MONDAY
Weather permitting, the Street Department will begin paving on Monday, May 21. They will start on Ebert Street then move to Water Street followed by Humphrey. One lane will remain open.
The paving project should be completed Wednesday, May 23.
