FRIDAY, MAY 25: Five things to know

Here are five things you might want to know for Friday, May 25, 2018:

THIS WEEK HAS FLOWN!

It’s been a crazy busy week for us. We’ll do our best to get back on track with 5 things starting Tuesday!

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCES

Cass County’s Memorial Day Parade will take place Monday morning and will begin with a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Logansport City Building at 601 E. Broadway. THe procession will move to the Cass County War Memorial at 4th and Broadway, then to the 6th Street Bridge and finally to Mount Hope Cemetery. Brief ceremonies will be held at each location, including the Civil War Monument and Legion Circle at the cemetery. Buses will be available for those who do not wish to walk the route. The grand marshal for this year’s event is World War II veteran Wilbur Trinen. The event is organized by the Cass County Veterans Council. All local, state and federal government offices are closed Monday. There will be no trash or recycling pickup on Monday for City of Logansport residents — all pickup will run one day behind next week, with a Saturday pickup. Flags are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 28.

MUSIC SERIES, CAROUSEL, POOL BEGIN THE SEASON THIS WEEKEND

The Summer Sundown Music Series begins this weekend at Little Turtle Waterway in Logansport. The event is held at 7 p.m. every Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through the end of August. A complete schedule of performers and locations can be found on the Cass County Arts Alliance Facebook page. The Cass County Carousel and the Logansport City Pool also open for the season this weekend. You can find more info about all three on CassCountyCalendar.com.

LCSC ANNOUNCES CRYSTAL BERRY RECIPIENTS

Logansport Community School Corporation surprised the 2018 recipients of its Crystal Berry Award yesterday afternoon. Nominations were accepted in each building. Kathy Bahnaman is the 2018 winner of the Crystal Berry honoring an outstanding teacher. She has been an LCSC teacher for 37 years, spending a year at Franklin Elementary before making a Columbia Elementary’s kindergarten classroom her home for the last 36 years.

The Crystal Berry Award for Support Staff was presented to Sheila Laing. She began her career as an instructional assistant 40 years ago at Jefferson Elementary School. Since then she has worked at several other area preschools, including the former All Saints preschool. She is now the instructional assistant for Berry Preschool at Columbia Elementary.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE GRANT AWARDED
Logansport Memorial Hospital (LMH) and Four County Counseling Center were recently named as joint grant recipients from Tyson Foods, Inc. The grant award, given by Tyson Foods, will provide funding for the development of community programming that addresses the challenge of substance use and abuse issues in Cass County. Substance abuse is currently a concern facing the entire county, and its impact is creating barriers to successful employment for local employers among the available workforce.
“During the grant period, a pilot referral process will be implemented at Tyson Foods. The grant will also provide an inventory of programs and organizations that offer substance abuse treatment, accept referrals, and provide ongoing support for substance use and abuse in Cass County. Upon completion, the community at-large will have a directory that lists these identified resources working to address local substance abuse issues and the gaps in care associated with existing substance abuse services.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Once again, we’re going to send you to CassCountyCalendar.com to find out what’s going on in the community! We’ll share five events next week, but the calendar is so full of events that we’re actually experiencing some technical difficulties and are actively working to get those resolved.
