Secretary of State Connie Lawson warns Hoosiers to disregard letters claiming to be a “state voter report”

Last Updated on May 4, 2018 by cassnetwork

The Cass County Voter Registration Office has been contacted by several voters concerning a letter they have received from an organization titled “Indiana State Voter Report”. This appears to be from a State Agency, but it in fact is not. This letter includes the recipient’s name and address, and recent voting history as well as that of nine others living near them. However, we have discovered that the vote history information in these letters is incorrect, and it appears to be randomly made up information. We have contacted the State Election Division as well as the Secretary of State, and have learned this is occurring statewide.

Below is a copy of the Indiana Secretary of State’s press release on this matter:

Secretary of State Connie Lawson has received numerous complaints from Hoosier voters who received a letter claiming to be a ‘state voter report.’ These letters purport to be voting record audits. The letter lists an individual’s name, address and voter participation for 2014 and 2016. It also lists neighbors and friends of the individual and their voter participation history.

“The State of Indiana does not treat lightly its role to strictly limit access to voting records,” said Secretary of State Connie Lawson. “Many of the Hoosiers who have contacted our office have indicated that their voting records, as stated in the letter, were inaccurate. I would advise anyone who receives the letter to disregard it.”

Indiana law restricts the availability of voter participation records. The state only provides this information to state political parties and legislative caucuses.
