TUESDAY, JUNE 26: 5 things to know and 5 upcoming events

Here are five things you might want to know for Tuesday, June 26, 2018:

FIREWORKS RULES FOR LOGANSPORT & SURROUNDING AREAS

Independence Day is just over a week away, but fireworks are not permitted within the city limits until later this week. Fireworks can only be discharged within the Logansport City limits between the hours of 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset beginning June 29 and continuing through July 9. They’re permitted on July 4 from 10 a.m. to midnight. Infractions are subject to a $100 fine.

For those outside the city limits, statewide the law permits fireworks from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. in areas not limited further by local ordinances.

Those using fireworks are reminded to be considerate of all neighbors, but particularly those with PTSD and those with pets.

LEWIS CASS CHOSEN FOR PILOT PROGRAM

Lewis Cass Junior High School is one of 20 middle schools across the state that has been chosen to participate in the Indiana Career Explorer (ICE) Pilot Program. The program is designed for eighth-graders to utilize all components of the Indiana Career Explorer tool, including career exploration, career plan development and skills and work values assessments.

This second round of middle schools joins 15 other schools that had participated in the first round last school year, and which will continue to participate in the program this upcoming school year.

UTILITY SERVICE BOARD TO TALK ABOUT LED LIGHTS

The Utility Service Board will meet tonight and one of the items on the agenda is a resolution related to LED streetlights.

According to the resolution, the city is seeking cost savings with an LED street lighting retrofit. LMU would provide the city with free labor to retrofit the streetlights and security lights to LED. The city council would provide $200,000 a year for the next three years, not to exceed $600,000, for the transition.

Dave Morris, chairman of the city council’s utility committee, says $150,000 per year would come from a city infrastructure fund, and the other $50,000 per year would be from CEDIT funds.

The agenda also indicates that there will be discussion of the timeline for disposal of the electric generating plant and water plant.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. tonight in the LMU Board Room on the 3rd Floor of the Logansport City Building.

The project is expected to last about a year, with the bridge reopening by July 2019.

The official detour includes 3rd St., Burlington Avenue, the Hoosier Heartland and the SR 29-US 35/US 24 Bypass.
