TUESDAY, JUNE 5: 5 things to know and 5 upcoming events

Here are five things you might want to know for Tuesday, June 5, 2018:

LEWIS CASS RECEIVES STATE GRANT

Lewis Cass and Maconaquah are among the 17 applicants selected to receive early education capacity building grants from the state. More than $1.5 million was awards to 54 pre-kindergarten programs. Lewis Cass will receive $53,586 while Maconaquah will receive just under $23,000.

FREE LUNCHES FOR STUDENTS THIS MONTH

Two area churches are offering free sack lunches to students this month. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Vineyard Community Church will offer lunches at Franklin Elementary School from 11 a.m. to noon. On Mondays and Wednesdays, Cross-Wind UMC will offer lunches to students at Huston Park from 11 a.m. to noon.

Logansport Community Schools will also be offering free breakfast and lunch this month for those 18 and under. Breakfast will be served on weekdays at Logansport HS from 7:40 to 8 a.m. and at Columbia Elementary from 9 to 9:30. Lunch will be served on weekdays from 11:30 to 12:15 at Columbia Elementary and from 11:30 to noon at Logansport HS.

WERST NAMED CITIZEN OF THE WEEK

Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell has named Marilyn Werst as this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week. Kitchell says she moved from California and opened a business 20 years ago, turning a former bakery into Boondocker’s, an event center that has hosted hundreds of dinners, meetings and celebrations. The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.

FAMILY FISHING DAY SET FOR JUNE 9

The Logansport Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Family Fishing Day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Izaak Walton League. Children must be accompanied by an adult and Preregistration through the parks department is required as spots are limited. It’s a catch and release program. No fishing license is required, but you must bring your own equipment and bait. You will learn the Indiana Fishing Regulations from Conservation Officer, Seth Owens. Each participant will receive a free day pass for the Muehlhausen Park Pool.
