A Logansport woman who was “California Dreaming” when she opened a business 20 years ago is this week’s recipient of a special city honor.
Marilyn Werst, a transplanted Californian, was selected Citizen of the Week today by Mayor Dave Kitchell for her vision that transformed what once was a bakery into an event center that has hosted hundreds of dinners, meetings and celebrations.
“What Marilyn saw in One Eel River Avenue was the potential for a business at the confluence of the Wabash and Eel rivers that reflects our heritage and promotes downtown Logansport,” Mayor Kitchell said. “Without the support of Marilyn and her husband Tom, I don’t know that we’d have found someone with the same kind of commitment to that area of the city and that building in particular.”
The building originally housed Small’s Bakery. Large ovens from that period of the building’s history remain. It later was known as Harley’s Party Place for many years.
The mayor said the site is historic not only because of the building, but because the city was named in a shooting match won by Col. John Duret on the banks of the Eel River there.
The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
