A well-known Cass County and Indiana benefactor who made Logansport his home is recognized this week with a special city honor.

Milt Cole of Cole Hardwood has been named Citizen of the Week by Mayor Dave Kitchell. Last week, the Tennessee native committed $1 million toward a more than $3 million goal of renovating and expanding the Cass County Family Y. Previously, he has donated to many causes in Indiana, including Indiana University at Kokomo and the Cole Family Building on the Logansport Ivy Tech Community College campus.

“Milt has personified what a true giving spirit is in terms of community,” the mayor said Wednesday. “What he has done has fostered continued growth in our city and county, but perhaps his greatest gift is the attitude he brings to our community. In making a truly benevolent gift to the community last week, he noted that if we all work together, there’s nothing this community can’t accomplish. He has said that with confidence many times, and while that is not true of some communities, he believes as many do in ours.”

While the Y capital campaign is in its early stages, the long-term impact will be tremendous not only for the health and well-being of city and county residents of all ages, but a huge impact on the area east of downtown on East Broadway and East Market.

“This dovetails with the ongoing commitment to the Logan’s Landing district and older portions of the city,” the mayor said. “It should enhance property values in the blocks near the Y and promote future investment in some of our legacy neighborhoods.”

Cole and his wife, Jean, are the second couple to be recognized with the Citizen of the Week honors since the program was initiated in 2016.

The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
