Memorial Center agreement submitted

City and county officials will be contemplating a proposal from a Noblesville entrepreneur to invest in a Cass County war memorial.

Rocky Shanehsaz, owner and operator of the wedding venue ranked No. 1 in the state for several years, has submitted a five-year proposal that calls for the city and county to only be responsible for matching funds for any state and federal grants used to renovate the center at Seventh and East Market streets. In turn, the city and county would receive a portion of net proceeds from events on the premises.

In his State of the City Speech earlier this year, Mayor Dave Kitchell set a July 1 deadline for Shanehsaz to submit a proposal for the use of the facility, the only joint city/county war memorial in the state. Shanehsaz met that deadline.

“This is not the final draft by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a good starting point for city and county officials to consider the financial commitment the city and county are making now and the long-term impact the center’s use as a wedding reception venue in this region of Indiana could do for our community,” Kitchell said.

Shanehsaz has indicated he will create 15 full-time positions in Logansport to staff the facility. The mayor said the economic impact would also likely be seen in the number of guests at local motels and wedding-related businesses.

The center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its two buildings include a home built in 1865 by a local banker and a two-story World War I memorial that opened in 1922.
