MONDAY, OCT. 8: Five things to know and five upcoming events

Here are five things you might want to know for Monday, Oct. 8:

IT’S A HOLIDAY: Monday, Oct. 8 is Columbus Day and state and federal offices are closed in observance of the holiday. The Indiana BMV and post offices are closed and there will be no mail delivery on Monday, Oct. 8.The Eel Township Trustee’s Office and the Cass County Government Building will also be closed. Some banks are also closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day.

SENATE CANDIDATES DEBATE TONIGHT: The candidates for U.S. Senate will debate tonight at Purdue University Northwest. The debate betwen Democrat incumbent Joe Donnelly, Republican Mike Braun and Libertarian Lucy Brenton is sponsored by the Indiana Debate Commission and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The debate will be broadcast and livestreamed by several Indiana media outlets, carried live on the Indiana Debate Commission website and broadcast by C-SPAN. Another debate is scheduled for October 30.

VOTING STARTS WEDNESDAY: Tuesday, Oct. 9 is the deadline to register to vote in the November election. If you’ve already registered and want to check your status, you can do so at indianavoters.com. POLAR BEAR EXPRESS RETURNS: Logansport’s mayor announced over the weekend that the Polar Bear Express, sponsored by the Indiana Transportation Museum, will be operating again in Cass and Howard Counties this holiday season. Mayor Dave Kitchell says ticket reservations will be available soon on the museum Web site, www.itm.org.
