Shelhart named Citizen of the Week

A former city and county official and long-time employee in the city’s spring industry is recognized this week with two city recognitions.

Don Shelhart, who celebrated his 90th birthday with a reception Saturday at McHale Community Complex, has been named Citizen of the Week. Saturday also was proclaimed Don Shelhart Day in the City of Logansport.

“Don is emblematic of the countless employees of the former Muehlhausen Brothers Spring and its successor companies who spent their careers in the industry locally,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said Wednesday.

Shelhart also is one of only two people in the past 40 years to have won terms on both the Logansport City Council and the Cass County Council. A native of Burnettsville, he met his wife, Frances, while she was a waitress at a west side restaurant. The couple has two children, a son, Jeff, and a daughter, Susan.

The Citizen of the Week recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
