A retiring former Logansport police chief and four Logansport firemen who were involved in south side blazes this year were recognized for their outstanding service Friday night.
A.J. Rozzi, who has served as a patrolman, detective and chief, was recognized as the Logansport Police Officer of the Year by the Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety. Among Rozzi’s accomplishments is a multi-state investigation that ended with a case being solved in Logansport.
The four firefighters honored are Justin Melton, Mike Ott, Levi Pullen and Jeremy Sterrett.
All received plaques from the city.
Mayor Dave Kitchell said their selection represents a difficult choice because of the numerous nominations the board received for the awards.
“We’re grateful for the many contributions A.J. has made to the city throughout his career and the fact that his son followed in his footsteps to serve on the department demonstrates what kind of role model he is. This has been a difficult year for our police and firefighters who work around the clock, in the worst of weather conditions and face life-threatening scenarios in which they put their own lives on the line to save our citizens. We couldn’t ask for more dedicated people to serve.”
This is the third year the board has presented the awards at the culmination of the Light Up Logansport Parade. Carl McPherson, Deputy Mayor Mercedes Brugh and the mayor serve on the board.
