STATEHOUSE  – State Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport) recently presented local resident Ben Yantis with a Sagamore of the Wabash Award at his farm in Logansport.

The Sagamore of the Wabash Award is the highest honor bestowed on a citizen by Indiana’s governor, and serves as a tribute to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state.

Head requested that Yantis receive the award for the work he has done to serve those in other countries. More than 15 years ago, Yantis began raising money and built over 800 well pumps at his farm for villages in South America. Each pump provides about 50 people with clean water. In addition to creating the pumps, Yantis has served on at least 50 mission trips to Africa as well as countries like Haiti, Romania, Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Nicaragua and El Salvador.

“Ben Yantis has gone out of his way to serve those inside and outside Indiana,” Head said. “His selfless acts have benefited so many people, and it is an honor to have him as part of our community. He is truly deserving of this award. Congratulations, Ben!”

A few years ago, Yantis partnered with CFC Distributors, Inc., a farm equipment supplier in Roann, which now produces the well pumps. An example of the well pump is pictured above.
