Cass County Health Department reports on tuberculosis (TB) cases in Cass County, Indiana

According to the monthly report from the Cass County Health Department to the Cass County Commissioners at their meeting on July 1, 2024, the Health Department has seen 40 latent TB patients and 2 active cases of tuberculosis, and one of those patients has died.

According to the CDC, tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium and usually affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body, like the brain, kidneys or spine.

Signs and symptoms of active TB disease include a cough that lasts three weeks or longer, chest pain, coughing up blood or phlegm from deep inside the lungs, weakness or fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, chills, fever, night sweats.

According to the CDC, people with inactive or latent TB do not have symptoms, but without treatment, they can develop active TB disease and become sick.

TB is spread through the air from person to person.

The CDC recommends that people that are at increased risk should be tested for TB.

According to the Cass County Health Department’s website, walk-in TB testing is available on Mondays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. for $15.
